Nadi Dosha: the eight points that decide most scores
Nadi is the heaviest of the eight Kootas at 8 points, and it is scored all or nothing. When both people’s birth stars fall in the same Nadi group the Koota scores zero, and that condition is called Nadi Dosha.
Because of the weight, a single Nadi failure caps a couple’s possible total at 28 out of 36 no matter how well everything else agrees. This is the most common reason a score that families were told to expect around 30 comes back around 20.

How the groups work
The 27 birth stars are divided into three Nadi groups — Adi, Madhya and Antya — nine stars in each. The assignment is fixed and traditional; it is not calculated from anything about the individuals beyond which star the Moon occupied at birth.
Different groups score the full eight points. The same group scores zero. There is nothing in between, which is what makes this Koota so decisive.
What it is held to indicate
The tradition associates Nadi with constitutional or temperamental similarity, and treats too much similarity as unfavourable in a marriage. Some sources connect the three Nadis to the three doshas of Ayurveda.
You will find sources that extend this into claims about the health of a couple’s children. Those claims have no evidentiary support, and this page does not repeat them.
The exceptions traditions recognise
Several conditions are proposed as exempting a couple from Nadi Dosha: both partners sharing the same birth star but different padas, the same moon sign with different birth stars, or particular planetary strengths in the two charts. As with Manglik cancellations, acceptance varies by tradition and by individual astrologer, and there is no single authority that settles it.
Because the exceptions are contested, a calculation that applies them silently is deciding something on your behalf, and it will disagree with whichever astrologer your family actually consults. A calculation that reports the condition, names the methodology it used, and leaves the judgement to a person is the more honest arrangement — and the more useful one, because it gives you something specific to ask about.
How to read a report that shows Nadi Dosha
The first thing worth checking is the birth star each chart produced, and how close the Moon was to a boundary. A nakshatra spans 13 degrees and 20 minutes, and the Moon crosses that in roughly a day. If either Moon sits within a few arc-minutes of the edge, a small error in the recorded birth date or time moves it into the neighbouring star — and since the neighbouring star is usually in a different Nadi group, the entire eight points can turn on a detail nobody has verified.
The second is what the remaining seven Kootas said. Nadi failing while the other seven score well is a materially different picture from Nadi failing alongside Bhakoot and Gana, and the total on its own hides that difference completely.
The third is what your family actually intends to do with the number. If the answer is that a low score ends the conversation regardless of anything else, then the specific reason for the low score stops mattering, and it is worth being clear about that with each other before the report is opened rather than after.
What Kundli matching cannot tell you
It cannot tell you whether a marriage will work. No study has shown a relationship between Guna scores and marital outcomes, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something.
It cannot tell you anything about a person’s character, conduct, honesty or intentions. A birth chart is calculated from a date, a time and a place; it contains no information about how someone has behaved.
