Manglik Dosha, explained without the alarm
Manglik Dosha, also called Kuja Dosha or Mangal Dosha, is the condition where Mars falls in particular houses of a birth chart. It is probably the single most anxiety-inducing term in Indian matchmaking, and a great deal of that anxiety comes from how rarely it is explained.

What the condition actually is
A chart is described as Manglik when Mars occupies the first, second, fourth, seventh, eighth or twelfth house. That is the whole definition. Different traditions count from different reference points — most commonly the ascendant, sometimes the Moon, sometimes Venus — which is the first reason two astrologers can disagree about the same chart.
Why the birth time matters so much here
Houses are measured from the ascendant, and the ascendant moves one degree every four minutes. A birth time that is an hour out moves it by half a sign, which can move Mars from one house into the next — and therefore turn a Manglik chart into a non-Manglik one, or the reverse.
An assessment made from the Moon instead is a recognised fallback when the time is unknown, but it is a weaker one and should be labelled as such. An assessment made from a guessed ascendant is not weaker; it is unfounded.
Cancellation rules, and how much they are agreed
Most traditions accept that when both partners are Manglik the condition is treated as mutually cancelling. Beyond that, agreement thins considerably.
Rules variously proposed include Mars being in its own sign or exalted, Jupiter aspecting Mars, the presence of particular sign placements, and the couple being past a certain age. Some astrologers accept all of these, some accept none. Any software that silently applies a long list of cancellations is making a decision on your behalf that your own astrologer may not agree with.
What the tradition does not claim
Manglik Dosha is not a prediction of death, illness, widowhood or catastrophe, whatever you may have been told. Those readings are a modern accretion of fear rather than a mainstream classical position, and they have caused real harm to real people — particularly to women, who bear the brunt of the label.
If a reading frightens you, that is a reason to seek a second opinion from an astrologer you trust, not a reason to act on it.
What Kundli matching cannot tell you
It cannot tell you whether a marriage will work. No study has shown a relationship between Guna scores and marital outcomes, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something.
It cannot tell you anything about a person’s character, conduct, honesty or intentions. A birth chart is calculated from a date, a time and a place; it contains no information about how someone has behaved.
